Mapping Connections

At the 2021 conference of the SCAR Standing Committee on Social Science and Humanities (SCHASS) I presented an ArcGIS StoryMap visualising Halley research station's many geographical connections.

Halley is, even more than other British Antarctic stations, characterised by extreme isolation. It is the most remote of the BAS stations and surrounded mostly by flat, empty ice. It is also, however, deeply connected to global networks. Halley is both a speck on the ice shelf and a node in international scientific networks. My StoryMap explores those connections, starting with the International Geophysical Year and ending with modern BAS science.
